It is therefore easy to work out what time of year Van Gogh painted this picture. The variety which he represents is the imperial fritillary, which was grown in French and Dutch gardens at the end of the 19th century. It has an orange-red flower, with a long stem from which each bulb produces between three and ten flowers. So to compose this bouquet, Vincent used only one or two bulbs, placing the cut flowers in a copper vase.

When he produced this painting, Vincent was living in Paris and was in close contact with Paul Signac. It is not surprising, therefore, to note that Van Gogh applied some of the principles of Neo-Impressionist painting, of which Signac was one of the major figures pointillist brushwork is used for the background, and a contrast of complementary colours, blue and orange, dominates the painting. However, the influence of these Neo-Impressionist theories remains limited. The separate brushstrokes were only used for a defined surface, the interplay of complementary colours did not limit Van Gogh in his choice of shades in any way, and finally, by choosing a still life, he was moving away from the themes treated by Seurat and his followers.

The painter Emile Bernard would later recall that Vincent was courting ¡®La Segatori', the Italian owner of the Tambourin caf¨¦ on the boulevard de Clichy, and used to give her paintings of flowers, which would last for ever . Thanks to painted bouquets like this one, the Tambourin would soon become a veritable artificial garden.

˜Ëî} Imperial Fritillaries in a Copper Vase

„“×÷ÕßÏíÄêšq”µ 1853 - 1890

„“×÷Õ߇ø¼® Dutch

„“×÷ÕßÐԄe Male

½¨Á¢ÈÕÆÚ 1887

ŒëH³ߴç w60 x h76 cm

Provenance Bequest of Count Isaac de Camondo, 1911

Original Title Fritillaires, couronne imp¨¦riale dans un vase de cuivre

Credit Line ? He was probably referring to this painting when he wrote to his brother Theo around October 10, briefly stating that he has finished ¡°a new size 30 canvas...another garden.¡± For months van Gogh had absorbed the warm Mediterranean atmosphere of Arles, and Entrance, remarkable for its strident and saturated colors, its profusion of semi-exotic foliage, and its dazzling, shadowless light, conveys the artist¡¯s newfound delight in the region. ¡°Everywhere and all over the vault of heaven,¡± he wrote Theo in mid-September, ¡°is a marvelous blue, and a sun sheds a radiance of pure sulphur, and it is soft and as lovely as the combination of heavenly blues and yellows in a Van der Meer of Delft...It absorbs me so much that I let myself go, never thinking of a single rule.¡± Most of the fifteen paintings van Gogh executed that fall represent the formal aspects of the garden on Place Lamartine, some of which are referred to as the Poet¡¯s Garden series. The Phillips painting represents the more prosaic side of the park, including its entrance, possibly at a point directly opposite van Gogh¡¯s newly rented Yellow House on the north side. For Duncan Phillips, van Gogh was ¡°by turns Japanese and Gothic,¡± and his vivid and exultant description of the work conveys much about his own love of expressionism in modern painting ¡°It is an outcry of the soul, that canvas, a shout of triumph, of joy in the sun, of thanks to God, for a brush and some good pigments wherewith to surpass the light of life itself in intensity. How to catch that pulse in nature, the repetition of certain shapes, the wave-like ripples of the heat, the saturated glare of the soil along the garden walk, the pungent, aromatic fragrance, the scintillant, opulent colors, blues and greens, yellows and oranges in full cry under the sun, the trees of many shapes and textures at the depths at which one could plunge and find shelter in the inner recesses of dark, cool shadow.¡± It is fitting that Phillips hung Entrance together with the Repentant Saint Peter of El Greco, whose prophecy he believed van Gogh to have fulfilled.

Title Entrance to the Public Gardens in Arle

Creator Vincent van Gogh

Creator Lifespan 1853/1890

Creator Nationality Dutch

Creator Gender male

Date Created 1888

Physical Dimensions w35.75 x h28.5 in

Type Paintings

Rights Acquired 1930, Public Domain

Medium Oil on canvas

Title Factories at Clichy

Creator Van Gogh, Vincent van Gogh

Date Created 1887

At the beginning of May 1889, four and a half months after his serious breakdown, Vincent van Gogh entered an asylum in Saint- R¨¦my in the Provence. When he was allowed to leave the grounds of the institution at the beginning of June, Field with Poppies was one of the first motifs he decided to paint. From a slightly elevated vantage point, he depicts the view over the valley with grain fields It is a tapestry of impastoed colors dominated by the contrasting effect of the complementary colors of red and green. The swirls of color lend the canvas dynamism, whereas the lines of perspective draw the viewer¡¯s gaze into the distance. When Gustav Pauli acquired Field with Poppies for 30,000 marks, thus continuing with his progressive purchasing policy, he sparked an art scandal that has since become famous. The Worpswede painter Carl Vinnen initiated the ¡°Protest of German Artists,¡± a pamphlet in which numerous artists and art critics came out against the purported ¡°foreign infiltration of German art¡± and what in their opinion was an increased acquisition of French art by German museums¡ªan accusation that was not borne out by the facts. The landscape as motif is on its way to becoming a state of soul, not least under the influence of Paul Gauguin, with whom van Gogh painted in Arles in 1888.

Title Landscape from Saint-R¨¦my

Creator Vincent van Gogh

Creator Lifespan 1853/1890

Creator Gender None

Date Created 1889

Physical Dimensions w885 x h705 mm

Type Painting. In a letter to his brother Theo, he described the motif, which he had previously captured in a drawing ?At the moment I am working on a study [¡] boats, seen from a quay, from above. The two boats are purplish pink, the water is very green, no sky, a tricolor flag on the mast.? A workman with a wheelbarrow is unloading sand. I have a drawing of it too.? Specifically, the scene is situated on the landing-place on the left bank of the Rhone, not far from the Place Lamartine, just a few steps away from van Gogh's studio at the time. The filigree depiction of the boots and their loads, the landing stage, the rudder and the masts give the impression of a rocking, unsteady plane over the water which supports the massively reinforced bank and the heavy chain. Van Gogh hoped to found an artists' community in Arles. He courted Gauguin, who did in fact come to Arles for a short time, and ¨¦mile Bernard. Together with other studies and a dedication, van Gogh sent the painting to Bernard in October 1888.? In his letter he left it open to his friend ¨C if he did not like the painting ¨C to remove the dedication and to return it in exchange for other paintings. ?But I think that you will like it, especially after you look at it for a while.? Bernard kept the study and showed it in an exhibition organized in memory of his friend, who had died two years previously, in Le Bare in 1892.

Title Les bateaux amarr¨¦s (Quay with Men Unloading Sand Barges)

Creator Vincent van Gogh

Creator Lifespan 1853/1890

Date 1888

Provenance Acquired in 1912 for the Kunstmuseum Essen, since 1922 Museum Folkwang

Type Painting

Rights ? The composition of boldly slicing the boat in half indicates Monet's study of the art of photography and Japanese ukiyoe prints.

Title On the Boat

Creator Lifespan 1840 - 1926

Creator Nationality French

Creator Gender Male

Creator Death Place Giverny

Creator Birth Place Paris

Date Created 1887

Location Created France

Signatures, Inscriptions, and Markings Signed and dated lower left Claude Monet 1887

Provenance Kojiro Matsukata, c. 1924; Sequestered by the French Government, 1944; Returned to Japan, 1959.

Physical Dimensions w1335 x h1455 mm

Painter Claude Monet

Object title (Japanese) ÖÛß[¤Ó

Object notes (Japanese) 1883Äꡢ¥â¥ͤÏÆޥ«¥ߩ`¥æÍö¤¤¢¤ȡ¢1892Äê¤ˤÏÕýʽ¤˽Y»餹¤뤳¤ȤȤʤ륢¥ꥹ?¥ª¥·¥å¥ǤȤ½¤Î×ӹ©¤¿¤Á¤òßB¤ì¤ƥ¦©`¥ë±h¥¸¥ô¥§¥ë¥˩`¤ËÒƤêס¤ࡣÎݷ󤫤é¤ۤɽü¤¤¡¢¥»©`¥̺ӤËע¤°֧Á÷¥¨¥ץȴ¨¤ËСÖۤ򸡤«¤٤Æß[¤Öһ¼ҤÎ×ˤòŽ׶ȤȤʤ¯Ã褤¤¿¤Τϡ¢¤³¤εؤ˶¨ס¤·¤Æég¤â¤ʤ¯¤Τ³¤ȤǤ¢¤ä¿¡£±¾×÷Ʒ¤ϡ¢¤½¤ì¤éһßB¤Ρ¸ÖÛß[¤ӡ¹¤ÎÖ÷î}¤òÃ褤¤¿×÷Ʒ¤ÎÖФǤ⡢ÌؤËÍê³ɶȤθߤ¤×÷Àý¤Ǥ¢¤롣¥â¥ͤΒQ¤ä¿Ö÷î}¤ÎÖФˡ¢³õÆڤΡ¶ͥ¤Î٤¿¤Á¡·£¨1867Äꡢ¥ª¥륻©`ÃÀÐgð^£©¤˴ú±í¤µ¤ì¤ë¤褦¤ʡ¢‘õÍâ¤ιâ¤ιâ¤ÎÖФˤ¿¤¿¤º¤à‹DÈËÏ񤬤¢¤ë¤ΤÏҊÌӤ»¤ʤ¤¡£¥â¥ͤò¡¢ïL¾°¤Τߤòۤ·¤¿»¼ҤȤυg¼ƒ¤ˤ¤¤¤ÇФì¤ʤ¤¤³¤Ȥòʾ¤¹¤³¤Τ褦¤Ê×÷Àý¤ϡ¢1860Äê´ú¡¢70Äê´ú¤˶य¡¢»¼Ҥ¬´εڤ˹â¤Èɫ²ʤ΄¿¹û¤ˌŸÐĤ¹¤ë¤ˤĤì¤Æ×ˤòÏû¤·¤ÆÐФ¯¤¬¡¢1880Äê´ú¤ˤ⡢±¾×÷Ʒ¤ò³õ¤á¤Ȥ·¤ƕrÕÛ×ˤò¬F¤·¤Ƥ¤¤롣»Ãæ¤򸲤¦Çà¤ȤФéɫ¡¢¾v¤ȥô¥¡©`¥ߥꥪ¥ó¤Îõr¤䤫¤ʌ±ȤÎÖФˉô¤Τ褦¤ʃžÑŤÊ×ˤÇÃ褫¤ì¤Ƥ¤¤ë¤Τϡ¢ӡÏóÅɤÎÓÐÁ¦¤ÊԮÖúÕߤǤ¢¤ä¿ǰ·ò¤Υ¨¥ë¥ͥ¹¥È?¥ª¥·¥å¥Ǥȥ¢¥ꥹ¤ȤÎég¤ËÉú¤ޤ줿ËÄÈˤÎÄ錄¤Á¤ÎÄڤζþÈˡ¢¥·¥奶¥ó¥̤ȥ֥é¥󥷥å¤Ǥ¢¤롣´󵨤ËСÖۤò°ë·֤˶ϤÁÇФ俘‹‡í¤ϡ¢Î÷Ñó½}»¤Ȥ·¤ƤϮÀý¤Ǥ¢¤뤬¡¢¤³¤ì¤ϥâ¥ͤ¬дÕæÐg¤äÈձ¾¤θ¡ÊÀ½}°滭¤«¤éѧ¤ӤȤ俤â¤ΤǤ¢¤í¤¦¡£¤·¤«¤·¡¢¥â¥ͤϡ¢ˮÃæ¤ò´󤭤¯¤Ȥꡢ¤½¤³¤Ëӳ¤ä¿Ӱ¤αí¬F¤Ë䄤¤évÐĤò’B¤äƤ¤¤ë¤ΤǤ¢¤롣£¨³öµä ¹úÁ¢Î÷ÑóÃÀÐgð^Ãû×÷ßx. –|¾©, ¹úÁ¢Î÷ÑóÃÀÐgð^, 2006. cat. no. 73£©

Artist Name (Japanese) ¥â¥͡¢¥¯¥í©`¥É

Type Paintings

Rights Matsukata Collection, http //www.nmwa.go.jp/en/information/privacy.html

Medium Oil on canvas

Intense depiction
If there is one painting that gives an intense depiction of the sweltering heat, the arid land, the crooked, twisting trunks and branches and the atmosphere of an olive grove in Provence, it is this work by Vincent van Gogh.

Title Olive grove

Creator Vincent van Gogh (1853 - 1890)

Date Created June 1889

Physical Dimensions 72,4 x 91,9 cm

Original Title Olijfgaard

Medium Oil on canvas

This is one of fifteen canvases of olive trees that van Gogh executed between June and December of 1889. He realized that his own palette was dark and old-fashioned and began experimenting with lighter colours and a different kind of brushstroke. In the spring and summer of the following year he regularly went painting in the open air in Asni¨¨res, a village near Paris. Later, in a letter to his sister Willemien, he wrote that in the landscape there he ¡®[saw] more colour than before¡¯. This patch of grass may well have been painted in Asni¨¨res. He probably wanted to practice his new technique. Every brushstroke coincides precisely with what he is depicting the blade of grass, the petal or the stem.
For this work Van Gogh used a canvas he had already painted on previously. X-ray images reveal the head of a woman with a hat under Patch of grass. It is assumed that he painted this female head in 1884-1885 in the Brabant village of Nuenen, so about two and a half years before he painted Patch of grass on top of it. The huge contrast between his sombre use of colour in his Nuenen period and his colourful and light palette in Paris is striking. His extremely rapid and radical development in style is thus literally embodied in this single painting.

Title Patch of grass

Creator Vincent van Gogh

Creator Lifespan 1853/1890

Creator Nationality Dutch

Creator Gender Male

Creator Death Place Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Creator Birth Place Zundert, The Netherlands

Date Created 1887

Physical Dimensions w390 x h300 mm (without frame)

Original Title Grasgrond

Type painting

Medium oil on canvas
