This watercolor was produced after La Farge visited Japan in 1886, where he studied Daoism and painting with the writer Okakura Kakuz¨ (1862¨C1913). Here, he employed Western modeling and depth, building the water¡¯s mass through transparent washes of light and dark blue, but also simulated the asymmetrical composition, lyrical tone, and bright blue color palette of contemporary Japanese woodblock prints. Hinting at the relationship between humans and the natural world, the ocean¡¯s tempestuous curls echo the swirls of dense gouache in the imaginary figure¡¯s robes, merging the figure of the ¡°rishi¡± with the surging waters behind him. According to the artist's writings, ¡°rishi¡± designates a powerful being who has reached immortality by following Daoist teachings. However, it is possible that La Farge misunderstood the term rishi Resshi¡ªthe Japanese pronunciation of Liezi (ÁÐ×Ó), is a legendary Daoist philosopher who could ride the wind.

Title A Rishi Stirring Up a Storm

Creator John La Farge (American, 1835¨C1910)

Date Created 1897

Physical Dimensions Sheet 27.3 x 38.9 cm (10 3/4 x 15 5/16 in.); Image 25 x 33.7 cm (9 13/16 x 13 1/4 in.); Secondary Support 28 x 40.8 cm (11 x 16 1/16 in.)

Provenance (Doll and Richards Gallery (est. 1866), Boston, MA.), The Wheelwright family, Boston, MA.
Mary C. The unconventional portrait likeness combines a delicate pencil rendering of the sitter's face, the tan paper ground serving as her skin, with thickly applied red and blue pastel for her clothing. The muted blues of her jacket seem to bleed into the adjacent flowers, bridging sitter and surroundings. In October 1890 they arrived at the village of Vaiala (also spelled Vaiale) in Samoa, near the modern capital of Apia. This became their home base until they left the country in late January 1891. Here they became aquainted with the famous English author, Robert Louis Stevenson. La Farge painted many watercolors documenting his experiences there. In common with other travellers from Europe and America he saw connections between the people and scenes he witnessed and the classical and archaic past, referencing Homer and Greek scuplture in his written descriptions, and seeing visual affinities with the art of Titian, Giorgione, Tintoretto, Poussin and Puvis de Chavannes. Layering thin, largely transparent washes of color, the painter captured the uncut blossoms as dynamic, untamed forms of nature, not as elements in a traditional still life. The exuberant floral design reflects the artist¡¯s admiration of Japanese art, which La Farge and other late 19th-century artists admired for its rich decorative effect. An extremely talented artist in his own right, stained glass came to be La Farge¡¯s most admired and sought-after medium in the early 1880s. This monumental work, depicting the allegorical figure of Architecture, was commissioned by the Philadelphia architect John M. Huston for the stairway landing of his suburban home. Translating into glass a bookplate design by his fellow artist Edwin Austin Abbey, La Farge used several innovative techniques in the production of this work. Known for his painterly approach, he used multiple layers of opalescent glass to create naturalistic effects of shading and depth.

Title Untitled (Architecture)

Creator John La Farge

Creator Lifespan 1835/1910

Creator Nationality American

Creator Gender M

Date 1903/1904

Provenance High Museum of Art, Atlanta; Virginia Carroll Crawford Collection

Type Glassware

Rights Photo ? 2015 High Museum of Art

Medium Glass, lead and glaze

Dimensions 96 x 60 inches

Title William Rush's Model

Creator Thomas Eakins, born Philadelphia, PA 1844-died Philadelphia, PA 1916

Date Created 1908

Physical Dimensions 36 1/4 x 48 1/8 in.
