Picasso created The Weeping Woman in response to the bombing of Guernica in the Spanish Civil War. Struck by the subject of the weeping woman during wartime, he painted a series, revisiting the theme conituously throughout 1937. This is the last and most elaborate version. It has been housed in the Tate Modern in London since 1987.
