Henry Wellesley, primer barón de Cowley (1773-1847), fue un distinguido diplomático y político inglés. El hermano menor de Arthur Wellesley, primer duque de Wellington, fue nombrado en 1791 embajador británico en La Haya, Países Bajos. Al año siguiente, se convirtió en secretario de la Legación en Estocolmo. Justo entonces adquirió esta veduta.
En palabras del especialista sir Michael Vincent Levey: Guardi dejó a la ciudad flotante en una frágil estabilidad, como si flotara en una burbuja entre la extensión de las aguas y la acuosidad del cielo. Nada es inmóvil: góndolas, velámenes y hasta los propios edificios no parecen descansar a lo largo del Gran Canal.
Hasta 1954, cuando la viuda del segundo y último vizconde Bertie de Thame decidió ponerlo a la venta, este óleo tuvo como hermano Isla Mayor de San Jorge y la Punta de la Giudecca.
La belleza de esta obra estudiada por el célebre Dario Succi, guarda relación con el óleo del acervo Linsky en el Museo Metropolitano de Arte de Nueva York, así como con el que resguarda la pinacoteca Bissey en París, y el de los fondos Wallace en Londres. En ellas, como en esta tabla hoy mexicana, el preciosismo típico delineó la arquitectura con un pincel de marta.
La pintura cuenta con un meticuloso registro de sus antiguos propietarios. Sabemos que Wellesley lo dejó en la capital británica durante su viaje a Lisboa, donde fue aprehendido por los franceses durante la época del Terror. Asimismo, se quedó en Europa cuando viajó a India y luego de su controvertido divorcio ante el abandono de su mujer en 1809, esta vista pasó a su primogénito Henry Richard Charles Wellesley, conde de Cowley, quien por 15 años fuera embajador del Reino Unido en París.
De la nutrida galería veneciana en el acervo de Fundación Carlos Slim esta obra es una de las más significativas. Aquí, Guardi no reproduce una estampa del Gran Canal, lo reinterpreta. Giclée Quality Guarantee:
Giclée printing is meant to produce a product at a higher quality and longer lifespan than a standard desktop inkjet printer. The word was used to describe digital reproductions of conventional artworks (painting or drawing) or photographs.
There are at least three basic criteria which must be met in order for the print to be considered a true giclée...
- For giclée printing, the paper or substrate used to actually print the final piece must be acid free and consist of a 100% cotton base.
- Any image that is to be printed as a giclée needs to be created at a resolution of no less than 300 dots per inch (DPI). This is to ensure that the final print has the sharpest detail and lacks any of the fragmentation that can occur with images less than 300 DPI.
- The last step to creating or confirming a true giclée print is the type of ink and printer used. The biggest contrast between a standard inkjet print and a giclée print is that giclées are printed using pigment-based inks rather than the dye-based inks found in lower cost inkjets. Pigment-based inks have a longer life span that can last anywhere from 100 to 200 years without significant fading.

All of our canvas prints are gallery wrapped. Your image will be visible in full on the front side of the canvas while the outer edges are either artistically extended or mirrored to wrap over the wood stretcher bars on all sides. Our canvases are hand-stretched over solid wood stretcher bars.
Our canvas art works arrive ready to hang right out the box! We will affix a sturdy sawtooth hanger to the back of your canvas and include in your package: two screws, two nails, a pair of gloves, and a gradienter (small water level to ensure art is hung straight).
